SYDNEY – Aaron Rosa was no match for Australian light heavyweight James Te Huna.

Te Huna displayed a violent striking display that carried him to a bloody and dominant first-round TKO victory over his Texan opponent.

The preliminary-card bout was part of tonight’s UFC on FX 2 event at Sydney’s Allphones Arena. It aired on FUEL TV prior to the night’s FX-televised main card.

The fighters traded punches early, but Te Huna soon unloaded a series of devastating uppercuts and hooks that left his opponent a badly bloodied mess. The shots were especially damaging once Te Huna closed the distance and gave Rosa little room to work against the cage.

Subsequent hooks dropped Rosa, and Te Huna then rained down a vicious barrage of ground and pound to force the merciful stoppage.

The crowd-pleasing TKO came at the 2:08 mark of the opening round.

“It’s good to be back here and get a win after last year’s performance,” Te Huna said. “It’s pretty nice.”

Te Huna (14-5 MMA, 3-1 UFC) is 8-1 over his past nine fights, and thanks in part to a 47-second knockout of Ricardo Romero at UFC 135, he’s won three of his four UFC fights.

Rosa (17-5 MMA, 1-2 UFC), who had dropped from heavyweight to light heavyweight for a recent majority-decision win over Matt Lucas at UFC on FOX 1, falls to 1-2 in the UFC.

South Penrith’s UFC fighter James Te Huna has sent out a warning to his next opponent Aaron Rosa saying he will finish him early.

Te Huna, 30, has been confirmed to fight the former heavyweight at UFC on FX 2 to be held at Allphones Arena in Sydney on March 3.

After recovering from a thumb injury suffered in his 47 second win over Ricardo Romero last September, Te Huna is eager to get back into the cage.

“(Aaron) is a real big guy, strong and tough so it’s going to be a good fight for me,’’ Te Huna told the Press.

“I am pretty confident I am going to finish him early like the last one.

“Preparation has been really good with my sponsor PC Group bringing me sparring partners who are tall and a similar size to the guy I will fight.’‘

The New Zealand born fighter also earnt himself a new four fight contract with the UFC after his last victory.

Despite the contract being only for four fights Te Huna is confident he can continue in the sport for some time.

“After the last fight I must have impressed someone as a couple of days later I got a four fight contract out of it,’’ he said.

“I am definitely happy about that, it has opened up another couple more years for me.

“I reckon right now I can go for another 10 years as long as I treat my body all the time and fit and injury free.

“There is a lot of guys in the UFC are in their late thirties and still fighting.’’

A light-heavyweight bout between Aaron Rosa (17-4 MMA, 1-1 UFC) and James Te Huna (13-5 MMA, 2-1 UFC) is slated for this March’s UFC on FX 2 event.

Featuring a Thiago Alves vs. Martin Kampmann headliner and the opening round of the UFC’s four-man flyweight tournament, UFC on FX 2 takes place March 3 (and airs live in the U.S. on March 2) at Allphones Arena in Sydney, Australia.

FX carries the main card, and the prelims air on FUEL TV. It’s not clear where Rosa vs. Te Huna will be situated on the card.

Rosa, a former Strikeforce and Bellator fighter, suffered a TKO loss to heavyweight Joey Beltran in his June UFC debut, but he rebounded this past month at UFC on FOX 1 with a majority-decision victory over light heavyweight Matt Lucas. Rosa, a well-rounded Texan who had been competing at heavyweight, looked sharper in his return to 205 pounds, and he’s now a solid 4-1 over his past five fights.

Te Huna, a New Zealander who gets to fight close to home, looks for his eighth win in nine fights. He recently rebounded from a submission loss to Alexander Gustafsson at UFC 127 with a 47-second knockout of Ricardo Romero at UFC 135. His past six wins, including those over notables such as Anthony Perosh and Igor Pokrajac, now have come via knockout.

The latest UFC on FX 2 card now includes:

Thiago Alves vs. Martin Kampmann

Demetrious Johnson vs. Ian McCall (flyweight-tourney semifinal)

Joseph Benavidez vs. Yasuhiro Urushitani (flyweight-tourney semifinal)

Court McGee vs. Constantinos Philippou

Aaron Rosa vs. James Te Huna

Sydney based New Zealander James Te Huna will return to the cage this weekend and has generously offered all of his match earnings to go to victims of the New Zealand earthquake.

At UFC 110, Te Huna made his octagon debut in front of a parochial hometown crowd. After breaking his arm in the first round, blocking a head kick by opponent Igor Pokrajac, Te Huna powered on to win via TKO in the third round. That brave performance was followed by 12 months of arduous rehabilitation and this weekend he finally returns to the cage.

Outside of his generous sponsors that include PC Group and Boost Mobile, his fight against dangerous striker Alexander Gustaffson at UFC 127 also presents his first pay cheque for fighting in a year. Te Huna did not need to look to far on where to spend it.

“With all the match earnings I earn from this fight this weekend, I’m going to put towards charity and donate it all towards earthquake victims,” Te Huna said.

James was born in Dartfield, just outside of Christchurch and stills holds close ties with many whose lives have been turned upside down by the earthquake that tore through the region.

“I had a lot of friends and a lot of family, that live in and around Christchurch,” Te Huna explained.

“It’s just devastating to see, it’s heartbreaking.”

As he watched on from Sydney the 29-year-old was inspired by the work being done on the ground in Christchurch. Te Huna, whose grandfather fought in World War II, believes it is during these tough times that the ANZAC spirit shines brightest.

“I’m very proud, New Zealand is such a small country but everyone is very supportive of each other and Australian’s are too.”

While he will be fighting this weekend hoping to give victims of the quake something to cheer for, James has also urged New Zealand to get behind his push to get the UFC in New Zealand. His dream is to fight in the main event of a card in his native country and believes people power is the way to make that happen.

“I’m pushing for the UFC to go to New Zealand, but what we really need is the fans to start emailing and tweeting Dana White,” he said.

Hello Everyone, I would like to firstly thank all my Fans for their support leading up to my fight this Sunday against Alex Gustafsson.

As you may know in the last week New Zealand has been hit with one of the worst earthquakes in history with a magnitude of 6.3.

I was born and raised near christchurch and still have most of my family residing there, and they are all safe. This recent disaster is heart breaking so without any hesitation i will be donating all of my fight earning from this weekend’s match to the Red Cross 2011 Earthquake Appeal, who are working to provide aid, staff and volunteers to christchurch. I would like to thank my major sponsors PC group and boost mobile who have been helping me through out my training leading up to the fight and also UFC has giving me the opportunity to donate my earnings to this cause.

If anyone else would like to donate and do not know how, please visit the Red Cross website.

“If you put your mind to it, you can do anything you want” James TeHuna told Excessive Force back in August 2009. Fast forward to February 2010 and James will live his dream – he will fight in the UFC, he signed a multi fight deal with the UFC and he will debut in Sydney, February 2010.

MMA fans across Australia and his birth place of New Zealand have watched James TeHuna rise within the ranks to become one of the most explosive, hard hitting, opponent dumping fighters on the Australian scene. “Fighting in the UFC in front of Australia and New Zealand is going to be massive for me and a huge rush.

With a career record of 12-4 the 93kg TeHuna has a trademark move of picking up his opponent, walking across the cage floor and dropping them. And the crowd loves it! He has won his last 5 fights and 4 of these have come by either KO or TKO such is his dominance.

Some of James’s most memorable fights include the shoulder popping incident against Pride Bushido veteran Takahiro Oba. “I had a hard time. My shoulder was dislocated in the opening round, I popped it back in and then in the second round I copped a soccer kick to the head. The fight went the distance and I managed to get the win, but I paid for it after.”

Another memorable fight was his most recent with which he became the Cage Fighting Championships Light Heavyweight champion in August 2009. He fought fellow Australian and former UFC fighter Anthony Perosh.

TeHuna finished off Perosh with a knock out in the 1st round. “I had just come off four fights in the last five months so I was ready for this, apart from having injuries coming into these fights I just had to work around them and play it smart.” It is a well rounded fighter and a credit to his trainers to be able to compensate for injuries and still win a fight so convincingly. He is currently in Las Vegas training in Wanderlai Silva’s gym and also at the Xtreme Couture gym. “I will train hard for a month in Vegas, come back to Sydney, taper down through Christmas and build it backup and time it right for February”

James was first interested in MMA after his brother Tama TeHuna, former Australian Amateur Kickboxing Champion, showed him some UFC videos he found at the local markets. He has hooked. “I thought ‘this is us!’. I already had some boxing and kickboxing fights under my belt so I did some Brazilian Jai Jitsu for two months and then I just jumped in”

Te Huna was signed by PRIDE in 2007, shortly before the organization was bought by the UFC’s parent company, Zuffa, LLC. He never got the opportunity to fight for PRIDE and his contract wasn’t picked up by the UFC after buyout. But times have changed and the UFC came knocking in September 2009. “After my last fight I heard rumours of the UFC heading to Australia, and then I received a multi-fight offer from them not long after that. It’s definitely a dream come true you know, I’ve sacrificed so much to get into this position I am in now. This has given me a whole new goal”

If you think you’re a tough guy man up for a serious ground and pound session with MMA fighter.

Mixed martial arts (MMA) is one of the toughest, most aggro sports around. Just look at human wrecking ball James Te Huna. The New Zealand-born Sydneysider has an impressive MMA record of 16-4 and won his UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship) debut earlier this year, despite – wait for it – breaking an arm in the first round!

An important element of both MMA and UFC is the ground and pound, a fighting tactic where you throw an opponent down and strike him from a position of strength with, well, whatever you deem appropriate, until he cries, “Mummy!”

But 29-year-old Te Huna says not many people know how to practise for it properly. “No one breaks this element down in their training.”

So get jiggy with it and take on the killer Kiwi’s magnificent marrow-mashing routine.

PUNCHING A MEDICINE BALL DOWN

Lean over in a punching position, throw a medicine ball down to the ground as hard as possible with one hand. Catch, immediately switch to the other hand, and repeat. Continue alternating between hands for one minute at high intensity. “This teaches you to generate punching power from your hips and core, which is very important in ground and pound,” Te Huna says.

PAD WORK ON ROUND PUNCHING BAG

With your partner on his back and his legs around your waist, place one hand across his face and use the other to repeatedly punch a round punching bag placed beside his head. Do as many punches as you can in one minute.

GROUND ’N’ POUND ON PUNCHING BAG

Sitting upright on your knees (not on your backside) on top of a body-shaped punching bag, unload as many downward punches on it as you can in one minute. “Make sure your technique is right and that you’re turning the fist so you land on the first two knuckles and not hooking round,” Te Huna says. “And with each punch give it a little pop on impact by snapping your wrist because that is how you knock someone out. This exercise teaches you to not only unload 100 per cent, but to punch the right way.”

HAMMER THROW ON PUNCHING BAG

Sitting upright on your knees (not on your backside) on top of a body-shaped punching bag, hold a medicine ball with both hands above your head. With both hands, slam the ball down into the bag as hard as you can and repeat as many times as possible in one minute. “This exercise is about using all those little muscles, as well as the core,” Te Huna says.

PAD WORK ON BALANCE BALL

Get a partner to hold out pads in front of you as you sit on your hips on the top of a balance ball. Now, while keeping your balance, unload as many punches as you can in one minute. “This simulates a fight situation, because you’re often throwing punches while off balance,” Te Huna explains. “While doing this exercise keep your posture, maintain balance and power through.” You can also switch the position of the pads your partner’s holding.

SWITCHING THE GROUND ’N’ POUND

Start in the neutral position and begin to unload punches. Then after five seconds, switch position and begin to punch from a different position. Continue to change every five seconds for one minute. “It mimics a fight situation and has you working different positions.”

Different Stance

Ground and pound centres on throwing power punches while off balance, mimicking a fight situation. “In boxing you throw a punch from a strong standing position, but take away the legs and how hard is that?” Te Huna says. “In UFC you have to land punches, and with power, even when off balance and when someone’s kicking you or trying to knock you off your feet.”

Bring Out The Dog
Last year James and his brother Tama brought their unique training methods to the Parramatta Eels to help with the squad’s on-field wrestling skills. Asked to “bring out the dog” in the team, each player went into the octagon with James for a session. “I got them on the ground and started to unload on them,” he says. “Some gave up, but you could see the dog come out of others and that’s what I wanted.”

Training Gains
The beauty of the exercises shown here is while they’re used by fighters like James, they can be also used by regular exercise enthusiasts. “You’ll improve your explosive power and core strength, as well as getting your hips involved in generating power in your punches,” Te Huna says.

Go Hard

Training is all about intensity. There’s no letting off. “Go for it 100 per cent at all times – you can rest later,” Te Huna says throughout the shoot. “There’s no holding back in the ring and there’s no holding back in training.”
